[Apple Magic Keyboard] Touch ID isn’t working anymore

A couple of months ago I purchased my new Magic Keyboard with Touch ID. Even if it seems nothing by I was really enthusiastic about using my new touch ID because this means not moving my hands for the extra 20cm away from the keyboard (lazy!!!).

Now the tragedy just happened! My fantastic and amazing touch ID doesn’t work anymore. Terrible terrible terrible sensation!

Started to look for reasons and feasible solutions hoping it wasn’t broken.

I’ve done a couple of normal checks, like cleaning the touch id and making sure the laptop was still supporting the fingerprint screen unlock, but nothing worked.

Below I will write the steps that brought me to identify the solution.

  1. Make sure your fingers and the Touch ID sensor are clean and dry.* Use a clean, lint-free cloth to wipe off any dirt or debris on the Touch ID sensor.
  2. Your finger should cover the Touch ID sensor completely. While Touch ID is scanning, you shouldn’t tap too quickly or move your finger around.
  3. Switch off and on the keyboard (those)
    • if the above it doesn’t work then unpair and pair back again.
  4. Choose Apple menu  > System Preferences, click Users & Groups, then click the lock  to make changes. Click Login Options, then make sure Automatic login is turned off.
  5. Choose Apple menu  > System Preferences, click Touch ID, then make sure “Unlocking your Mac” or “iTunes Store, App Store & Apple Books” is turned on, and that you’ve added one or more fingerprints.
  6. Try to add a different fingerprint.
  7. Turn your keyboard off and back on again, then connect your keyboard to your Mac with the USB to Lightning cable. With the Lightning cable Lock the screen and then unlock it with the keyboard touch ID.
  8. Restart your Mac.

The above solutions should work if it still not working try to either use the keyboard cleaner spray or check with your retailer if it needs fix it (apple warranty link: https://checkcoverage.apple.com/gb/en/;jsessionid=node07wfglne9ze5njdwkr3w5jg984337481.node0 )
